Rebuilding billing from the meter up.
Utilities Group is an Australian software company building the billing platform we always wished existed — modern, honest, AI-native, and designed for the retailers keeping the lights on and the networks connected.
Make billing a feature, not a liability.
Billing is where trust either gets earned or eroded. Most retailers carry it on infrastructure written before the NEM, the NBN or smart meters existed — duct-taped, brittle, expensive.
We're building the alternative: a single platform where rating, invoicing, customer operations and compliance live together, and where AI handles the work that shouldn't need a human.
The goal isn't AI for its own sake. The goal is fewer wrong bills, faster dispute resolution, and customers who actually understand what they're being charged for.
We built it with Claude. Because we could.
Every part of Utilities Group — the rating engine, the operator console, the customer portal, the compliance workflows — was designed and built alongside AI. Not as a gimmick. As the only way a small team could realistically replace a billing stack that normally takes hundreds of engineers and half a decade.
- A handful of engineers, paired with AI, built what used to take armies.
- Every design decision was stress-tested against regulatory edge cases.
- AI isn't a bolted-on feature — it's how the product was designed, shipped, and now operates.
How we build.
Compliance is not optional
Every feature is designed against the AER Retail Code, TCP Code and the Privacy Act. If it would embarrass the ombudsman, we don't ship it.
Human-in-the-loop by default
AI drafts, proposes, triages. Humans approve anything that touches money or a customer's dignity.
Private by construction
Australian hosting. No customer data used for foundation-model training. Data residency and deletion controls on every tier.
